Should we make everything art, or make everyone artists?

“Let us then create a new guild of craftsmen without the class distinctions that raise an arrogant barrier between craftsman and artist! Together let us desire, conceive, and create the new structure of the future, which will embrace architecture and sculpture and painting in one unity and which will one day rise toward heaven from the hands of a million workers like the crystal symbol of a new faith.” – Walter Gropius

My friend posted this quote on Facebook:

“Let us then create a new guild of craftsmen without the class distinctions that raise an arrogant barrier between craftsman and artist! Together let us desire, conceive, and create the new structure of the future, which will embrace architecture and sculpture and painting in one unity and which will one day rise toward heaven from the hands of a million workers like the crystal symbol of a new faith.” – Walter Gropius

and I wanted to learn more! A quick search lead me to (http://idaaf.com/the-school-of-art-architecture-and-design-bauhaus/) and a continuation of the quite, along with some analysis.

“Let us then create a new guild of craftsmen without the class distinctions that raise an arrogant barrier between craftsman and artist! Together let us desire, conceive, and create the new structure of the future, which will embrace architecture and sculpture and painting in one unity and which will one day rise toward heaven from the hands of a million workers like the crystal symbol of a new faith.” From the article “Gropius decided that it was essential to unite every branch of art and craft and to make them mass produced, for them to reflect the new era of architecture and design.”

Interesting. I would say, let’s make the creative process, the pursuit of artistic endevours accessible to everyone. A million unique visions, not mass produced facsimlies of art. Definitely some more to think about here.
